When making a cup of tea, do you pour the tea first… or the milk first?

It seems like such a small thing, doesn’t it?

You boil the water.
You steep the tea.
You add a splash of milk.

But then comes the question that has quietly divided tea drinkers for generations…

Do you pour the tea first… or the milk first?

This little ritual actually began in earlier centuries, when fine porcelain cups were delicate and expensive. Some believe milk was poured into the cup first to prevent the hot tea from cracking the china.

Others insist that proper tea etiquette calls for pouring the tea first. Why? Because adding milk after allows you to better judge the strength and color of the brew before adjusting it to your liking.

But here’s the lovely truth…

There isn’t one single “correct” answer for every tea drinker.

Pouring milk first gently blends the flavors from the beginning. The tea swirls softly into the creaminess, creating a lighter, smoother cup.

Pouring tea first allows you to see the rich amber tones before adding just the right amount of milk. It feels intentional, measured, and perhaps just a touch ceremonial.

And maybe that’s what I love most about this debate! It has it’s advantages for both!

It reminds us that tea isn’t just a beverage — it’s a ritual. A pause. A personal preference. A tiny decision that makes the moment yours.

So… Which Are You?

Are you:

☕ Team Tea First — enjoying the deep color before adding milk?

🥛 Team Milk First — letting the tea swirl into creamy comfort?

Or are you like me and many of us… simply grateful for a warm cup in your hands?

However you pour it, there’s something beautiful about slowing down long enough to notice.

And if you ask me…

There’s always a seat at my tea table, whichever is your preference!

Until next time — keep the kettle warm. 🫖✨

Cheers!

Anita
